Prompted by the continuing requests for information on the surviving family members of wartime evacuees from Burma two of our founding members purchased and transcribed three files from the British Library comprising thousands of records of the survivors and casualties. We have since published our transcribed copy of an official report on the evacuation. This collection of work is the foundation of and gives ethos to the Anglo-Burmese Library.
We envisage the library becoming the foremost access point for anyone requiring first hand information on a wide range of subjects relating to colonial era Burma and it will identify, unify and make available biographical records which relate to the multicultural community whose home was Burma. The library will consist of two parts. This web-site is the first part, our intention is that it can be easily searched at all times. The second part of the library will be the repository, to contain all printed and other material which contains relevant and useful biographical information both from Burma and elsewhere. There are a multitude of sources for genealogical information relating to our families from colonial era Burma, from the British Library to the Society of Genealogists and not forgetting the Family Search website. However, these sources are scattered, obscure and incomplete. From church records we have seen, less than a third can be found in the British Library, India Office records. Of those, the vast majority are stated to be from "Bengal" - adding an unnecessary layer of confusion. For people like us, looking for our families, this situation is nothing less than chaos. Our aim is to bring order to this situation. All of us who have done family research in this area know the difficulties. We also have hard-earned knowledge which can be used to light the path of those who will follow us. |
