St. Michael's, school, Maymyo
Precious newsletters/notes on the annual gathering (post war) of the students from St. Michael's school are donated to us from another very valued and caring member, Mr David Cornelius, regarding his mother / family / friends. Many others are mentioned - please do have a read, it really is quite of it's time, the love and affection demonstrated is so very heart warming.
I.F.C.
Mr Christopher Thompson has very kindly supplied us with a copy of the monthly "Flotilla News" dated 1st December 1941 which was also published in Burmese. This edition includes an obituary of Capt. James Armstrong Winter with a comment from Captain T.F. Musgrave.
John Cormack Mackenzie
David Cornelius has supplied us with additional photos of his family to update the biography of his grandfather John Cormack Mackenzie.
Emigration from Bengal to Burma, 1888 by Philip Nolan, C.S.
A very interesting and in-depth report dealing with the existing levels of emigration (from 1881) and how they can be "accelerated and guided so as to produce the greatest possible amount of good."
Trek News
Escape from the Yellow Peril by Allan Knight
Transcribed and donated by Ms K.W., with all our thanks, this diary was originally published as a small book written by her cousin Mr Allan Knight. His memoirs are very generous but also a sad account from a Gentleman who worked at the Secretariat in Rangoon, who took leave, but ended up on a Trek he never though could happen - his last few pages include a number of people involved in this Trek and where and how they reached India as referenced by published Newspaper accounts.
Myitkyina Letter
Christopher Thompson has also provided us with "Another letter for your archives. It shows that we left Myitkyina by plane on the 5 May 1942 which was the last day, as on the 6th people were killed on the runway in the planes trying to take off." The letter is to Mrs Thompson from James P. Cloman? of St. Columban's , Myitkyina, dated 12th Sept. 1948.

The Burma newspapers printed articles relating to "Home" news i.e. the U.K.. Many articles refer to India, of course, and other "Empire" countries as well as briefly covering world news. They also did a lot of advertising, items lost, for rent/sale etc., which in some cases have proved valuable to our members. There are many pages to each publication but only a small handful contain information relevant to Burma. The ABL extracts only the Burma news. The following extracts are now available from The Rangoon Times 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909 & 1910. 1909 & 1910 have now been updated.
Local / General News - which can include news from the "Districts" but also announcements of Births, Marriages, Deaths / Divorce / Separations / Change of Name, etc. also - the Burma Gazette and Passenger Lists, which, as explained before, are not in-depth, listing only the passengers names, often misspelled and may also include the words "and child - infant" depending on their age.
The Rangoon Times 1911 - 15 - BMD's only for the moment.
The Rangoon Times 1887 - has now been updated.
The Rangoon Gazette Weekly Budget 1916 - BMD's are available
Available shortly
A unique 3rd Anglo-Burmese War Article - so very kindly supplied by a member - J.T.

Burma - Birth / Marriage's / Death's etc.
We have been alerted, once again, that there may be a publication regarding the above in the offing.
We wonder if anyone has done as much in-depth research on the subject as the ABL, Twelve years now.
So much of our information on Colonial era BMD's was always available, but we gave our time and effort to collect it -
even going the extra mile(s) by paying our own way, many times, to the country and wading through quite a lot of vegetation.
Still, we will know our work should these unscrupulous people try to take credit for our volunteers time consuming dedication.

Our apologies for this. Should you wish to supply us with any documents please start your comment on the lines of the following:-
" I / we would like to supply the ABL with ... " These emails will always be looked at first, but please remember we get so many of them and we have to read every one of them, so please be as specific as possible. ABL note; We were made aware by Steve K. that our "Contact Us Form," which states that if one "highlights" that they have information/documents etc. to give/share with the world or members of the ABL, "will always be replied to first" - - Steve has informed us that there is no way that one can "highlight" said info. Our apologies for this. Should you wish to supply us with any documents please start your comment on the lines of the following:-
" I / we would like to supply the ABL with ... " These emails will always be looked at first, but please remember we get so many of them and we have to read every one of them, so please be as specific as possible. We are working on a better solution and are sorry if it takes us rather a long time to reply to everyone, please be patient as we receive so many lovely emails every day.

We are still re-vamping the website(s) in order to make life easier for everyone. One issue was brought to light a while ago with regard to "tablet" users and we have been sorting out various pages in order to make them more efficient for these users. Please bear with us - we're getting there.
The Burma Railways employees update includes 1900, 1913, 1932 & 1936 and is now published.
The update to the employees of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Co. is almost ready for publication.
Additional Trek memoirs will be available shortly.
We didn't get much rest. Neither did Steve Rothwell - as dedicated as ever - he has added additions to his 6th Burma Rifles history and has produced a series of maps which go a long way to helping the "non military minded," as well as those of course who know about this part of history. Even if the military side of things does not particularly interest you it is well worth paying a visit to his excellent, interesting and very easy to use website:- https://homepages.force9.net/rothwell/burmaweb/Jap15Army0142.htm
May we remind everyone that many of the entries on our contact us page have disappeared after an "update" - these things are sent to try us.
If you were expecting to hear from us then please re-send your email. We are now aware that this "problem" started a long time ago.
In Dec./Jan. we publish updates to the evacuation & casualty lists - if a family member(s) is not on the official lists then please send us their details and we will add their names to our lists to preserve their memory and their moment in time.

Government Annual Reports - Retirement/Pension & General (various departments,) under the heading of Companies and Employment. Although still under construction and mostly concerned with post war files a few do mention the work/role of the employee during the evacuation/war effort. This section, part of our re-vamp, has a dedicated search facility, the Members' Area search will not return results for these reports. The same applies to the Evacuation 1942 "Trek" section which has also undergone a re-vamp. These areas must entered and then searched.

The first "Burma" Internees of WW11
We have received a photo from the son of George Reginald Achard, Circle Inspector of Police, Victoria Point, who, along with J.C. Naiff, Sub-divnl. Officer, were the first to be captured. Along with Achard and Naiff there is also a Japanese Officer and one other, possibly an interpreter. In the background two other officers? can just be seen. The ABL has added a copy of a letter from the Governor of Burma dated Rangoon 9th Jan. 1942 suggesting the names of British held Japanese internees who might be offered in exchange for these "valuable officers."
Extracts (B.M.D's, shipping, appointments etc.) from The Prince of Wales Island Gazette:-
Dec. 1824 - Dec. 1826
Jan. - Dec. 1827 - 1829

There will not be an aweful lot published this month, family commitments come first, still, we have a lot of info. which we would like to be published for this year - clear the decks - as it were - to be ready for 2017.
The Trek Out of Burma,1942, Members' Area, now has its own dedicated site within the ABL website and is very easy to research. The Casualty and Internee lists have been updated and the Evacuee list will be updated in the new year.
The updating of the Trek Lists is taking a bit longer than expected partly because we took this opportunity of re-vamping this part of our website, once again to make things easier for members (and us) to search and not to get "lost" as with so many websites these days. The following might explain further:-
General Correspondence - Another new section - Under the "Trek"
This is a new section for us - we have had to create - there are so many "bits n bobs" all relating to Evacuees, Casualties and Internees - Many people and their details are not on any lists - for a number of reasons. With the documents we purchase we are trying to help fill gaps e.g. The Censor in India (obviously a letter from an evacuee from Burma) had picked up on a letter from Mrs A.W.H. Breakey to Mrs L.J. Mockley with some vital information regarding the whereabouts of her (now interned) daughter, Mrs Tun Hla Oung and giving the authorities their first indication of the location of the Internment Camp at Maymyo before many of them were relocated .... A small number of Death Certificates issued in Japanese regarding Internees at the Tavoy Camp, (with an English translation.)
Lt. William H.D. Newton, Civil Surgeon - His memoirs of the 1942 Evacuation of Burma.
St. Michael's Diocesan Girls' School, Maymyo, has now been updated and is available.
P.W.D. Membership Application Form
Preliminary Report on Reconstruction by K.M. MacDowell gives a little history/workings of the Irrigating Dept. - This is new section we're working on - so please bear with us on this one - it's nearly ready.
BMD's - from various sources is always being updated so please keep checking.
M.N.A. - So many more new files - so little time - we are tying to get all on line asap.

Additional photos of headstones from Insein, Maymyo and Mandalay have been added to the relevant pages.
The updated biography for John Cormack Mackenzie is now available.
Our Ecclesiastical Burial returns have been updated for the years 1877-98, Baptisms and Marriages will follow shortly. These returns were made at the request of the Govt. in 1900 - the handwriting had changed somewhat by then therefore the transcriptions by the priests are at times quite wrong. A number of the entries from this era are deaths of Military personnel, e.g. the Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset (shire) Regiments, the Madras Native Infantry and Medical Corps.etc.
The Rangoon Times - still no news yet on the deliver date...
Steve Rothwell had added additional details to the history of the Burma Intelligence Corps. Well worth a read even if you're not particularly interested in military history. There is also a fragmented history of each platoon https://homepages.force9.net/rothwell/burmaweb/BIC.htm

An ABL member asked if there was a list of those died during the Japanese invasion and occupation - the answer is yes - but they are all over the place, we are trying to compile this information from the usual sources and some of our own, if you have details that should be incorporated in our list, please do let us know.
Thacker's 1915 - is now back on line - Google Docs. are doing some kind of an upgrade... and this transcription (together with all it's links went haywire) - we are pleased to say our IT people have sorted it. I.F.C. Additional snippets including a little on the Airways Co., and the Company's Railway, the Mingun Bell and a brief Personnel List as compiled by Captains Chubb and Duckworth.
A History of Rangoon by B.R. Pearn, published 1939. We have provided extracts to this, "very expensive and difficult to get hold of" book, we have also dissected it into relevant years to aid research, but in reality it is well worth reading from the beginning.
Various BMD's are now fully transcribed - burials for example up to 1946, Registration of Births up to 1953 - (Marriages 1937-1948 available shortly.)
WWII - The destruction of steamers (Capt. Chubb) and Trek memoirs from Captain Watts with reference to Capt. Railston - others mentioned are Major Brown, Aserat Jama, the Sawbwa of Thanbut and the good Samaritan from Farapoke village.

It was an experience I will never forget. These emaciated women awoke that morning to yet another day of brutal imprisonment and found instead, and to their amazement, that we had arrived and their ordeal was over. It is difficult to describe their evident joy, relief and gratitude. There was a great deal to be done for them including urgent medical attention, provision of food and other administrative arrangements. We were not equipped for this - our purpose in life was hunting and killing Japanese soldiers - and, although we did what we could, adequate arrangements had to come later...." |

New in Biographies:- Robert Douglas Thorburn, an Assistant Pipe Line Superintendent with the Burmah Oil Co, featuring many photos of family and friends.
New in Photo Gallery:- photographs of Oil Fields, Pipe Laying & Pumping Stations from the Robert Thorburn collection
Additions to the Myanmar Nat. Archives page includes a file on the Burma Frontier Service 1942-45 re: Postings, Leave, Recalls, Promotions, List of Proposed Administrators for the Unoccupied Areas, List of Officers empowered as Asst. Superintendents & Magistrates. A handwritten letter from 1944, no signature just initials, encloses a sketch drawn by "Peters" of buried treasure, not reproduced unfortunately, finally, a medical report on the heart attack suffered by Lt.-Col. N.W. Kelly O.B.E.,C.A.S.(B), S.C.A.O.
A new section has been added covering the Forest Industry and includes photographs and employment details of Forest Officers.
An additional page of photos of Colonial buildings and landmarks.
It has been pointed out to us recently that perhaps not everyone is aware what BMD's stands for... for those of you new to genealogy it stands for Births, Marriages and Death records. They really should be known as Birth Marriage and Burial's because that is what the returns are called. The "Returns" are separate entries made from the Church's Registry Books for the Government and relayed every few months by the priest of every parish. Not all the priests managed to fulfill this legal requirement and so many of the entries found in the Registry Books are not to be found anywhere else. Transcriptions also suffer because what might look like a T is in fact a J... etc. The ABL tries at all times to duplicate from the original Registry Books. We also rely on the returns which we have indexed and because we know the people involved we know the name is, for example, Freeman and not Treeman....

Dec. 2013
This has been an exceptional year for the ABL, with the growth in membership, the re-vamp of the website and the uploading of new material. The Photo Gallery recently introduced is going from strength to strength with many more photos to come. The companies, schools and maps sections are also expanding, with lots of material still to be added.
Additional photos of headstones have been added recently for Maymyo, Moulmein, Rangoon (with a few from Mandalay). Birth, Marriage and Burial indexes are now available for 1891-98, with a few from 1901,1907 and 1933, there are many more to come.
To all of you who have sent us biographical material we apologies for the delay in adding your stories and photos, we now have a volunteer who is working as quickly as he can to upload the backlog. Documents recently received from Burma are being searched for biographical information and should be available in the new year.
With small additions to the:- military section, photos of memorials, obituaries, 1941 directory and church histories I think this completes the news for December. As the holiday period draws closer, things will start to slow down here as we enjoy the festive season but emails will still be monitored. The ABL team wishes you a very happy Christmas and a healthy and peaceful new year.

Important Announcement regarding the
Evacuation of Burma, 1942 otherwise known as
"The Trek"
The Casualty, Evacuee and Internee lists purchased and transcribed by the Anglo-Burmese Library and published by us in 2009,
are and will always be free to view on our website together with all the memoirs of the Trek which are donated to us.
An ABL member has alerted us to the fact that a few unscrupulous people have downloaded this material from our website with the intention of re-publishing the data in order to make money from it, possibly on a website but it could be in paper form/Kindle etc.
This has happened to the ABL before and will no doubt continue to happen because a lot of our material is provided for free.
This notification is simply because we believe that all and any material concerning the Trek should never be used for financial gain.

This bit of news applies to members only - your News page has been moved to a sub-section of the Welcome and Home Page,
this will allow us a bit more freedom to create additional sections for new material.
Biography Section:- The granddaughter of James Robb and Florence Emily Edwards, Majors in The Salvation Army, has provided us with a short biography of their lives. They were posted to Toungoo and then Maymyo to manage the Soldiers' Home and Hostel there. A photo album is also included, if you recognise anyone please let us know who they are. Their daughter Edith kept an autograph book signed by friends and acquaintances. Florence and family trekked out, her diary has been transcribed and is available on the Trek page. James also made the trek and a reconstruction of his journey is also available on the Trek page.
We have a new addition to the ABL the Biography section, in time we hope it will become "the" place to contribute life stories and photos. Our first is a wonderful snapshot of the life of Moung Ohn Ghine, A.T.M., C.I.E., 1858 - 1911. His printed letters covering the period 1874 - 1910 are to and from his many friends and acquaintances. As the Representative of the Province of Burma he and his wife Mah Yait attended the Coronation of King Edward V11 and Queen Alexandra and this event is included in his account
of his visit to the U.K. Our re-vamp of the site is still on-going apologies if it all seems to be taking a little longer than expected.

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the sudden death of Mark Steevens.
Mark was a founding member and Chairman of the Anglo-Burmese Library, his desire and passion
for preserving Anglo-Burmese history was the inspiration for the creation of the "ABL"
Thank you to everyone for your kind words and condolences, they are very much appreciated.
