BAYLEY-DE-CASTROMajor Alexander (Sandy), M.B.E.Died near Natkaw on or about 15th June, 1942 from exhaustion while on the trek from Burma. Major Bayley-De-Castro was retired from the I.M.D. and formerly of Kalaw. Vide The Statesman of 15th September, 1942

BELL(a child)Mr E. Perry reported at Magherita that a child of Cpl. and Mrs Bell had died on the trek (Mrs Bell is said to have been Miss Sylvia Smith). Cpl. Bell belongs to the Gloucester Regiment 
BENNETTMiss Poppy (12 yrs.)Died at Yaw Bang before the end of August , 1942. Reported by Sgt. Shaw and Sub. Indura Singh at Margherita. Poppy Bennett was a pupil of Bishop Strachan's Home, Rangoon. Ref. Margherita Report, 9-10-42, and Shinbwiyang Report, 12/25-9-42 
BENNETTMrs Rose Mary (67 yrs.)Died on the trek, of pneumonia, about 10th June, 1942. Reported by her daughter Mrs H.G. Snadden of 75 Theatre Road, Calcutta. Mrs R.M. Bennett of “East Lynne”, Civil Station Road, Insein, is the grandmother of the three Snadden girls who also died on the trek and were in the same party.

BLAKEMr and Mrs C.W.A. and daughter Miss B.Presumed dead. In a letter dated Shillong 16-7-43, Mrs A.J. Fraser (daughter of Mr and Mrs Blake) of “Jorie Cottage”, Laitumkhrah, Shillong, it was stated--”Rumour has it that my father died at Myitkyina of dysentery, so my mother and sister left with a party on 7-5-42 to trek to India. They had not gone far, when my sister also passed away with dysentery, and my mother died not long after of a broken heart.”

BRINDLEMr T.Death presumed. Seen by Mrs Birrel this side of Shinbwiyang about early June, 1942 suffering from swollen feet and bad eyes. No further news received (27-11-42) 
BROOKESWilliam Linfield, Major, I.M.D.Died at Shinbwiyang on the 24th July, 1942. Was retired from the I.M.D. but rejoined for the war and was in charge of No. 1, M.S. Depot, Mandalay. A resident of “Lindfield”, Fryer Road, Maymyo 
BROOKESW.L., CorporalDeath presumed. Left very ill on the way to Shinbwiyang, was last seen in a serious condition by Mr R. James and Miss M. Brookes (sister) and later by Sgt. Florence. No news since received. Reported from Margherita on 6-11-42. Cpl. W.L. Brookes is the son of Major William Linfield Brookes, I.M.D. 
BROWNMr and Mrs M.J. and four childrenDeaths presumed. Reported by Miss Hindle to be last seen east of Shinbwiyang. She heard the family were in a bad way. No further information

CHERRYMANLawrence EdwardDied in Burma. Reported by Major Tainsh. Mr L.E. Cherryman was a conductor in the I.A.O.C. and the husband of Francis May Cherryman.  The following is from the book written by Major A.R. Tainsh entitled "..and some fell by the wayside," " 5th July 1942.  On the way down to Nawngyang Hka in one place I found a soldier clerk named Cherryman who had died, having stepped into a mud hole three feet deep which he was unabel to get out, these holes had been made by Steel Company elephants." This entry was added on the11th July 2014 
CHILDERSMrsBadly wounded at Myitkyina Airport on 6-5-42 while waiting for a plane. Information from the diary of Miss Aimee Lovatt. She is now believed to be back at Kalaw 
CLAUDIUSMr C.D.Death presumed. Papers picked up by Mr Lindop near a group of corpses on the Shinbwiyang Road indicated that he might be dead. Vide Supplementary List No. 1 of deaths on Shinbwiyang Road—from the Refugee Administrator, Margherita. Mr Claudius was of the Burma Rlys., Myitnge

CLARKSybil (14 yrs.)During February, 1942, Miss Sybil Clark was reported to be with the Convent party at Mandalay. No news since. Sybil is a sister of John and Agnes Clark now in India. (See above)

CONNORSMr Norman PatrickDied. His wife has reported to the Inspector General of Civil Hospitals (Burma) that her husband died in the first week of June, 1942, while trekking on the Hukawng Valley route. Mr N.P. Connors was Head Sergeant, General Hospital, Rangoon 
COOPEREdward Leo (37 yrs)Died of exhaustion July 1942 in the Hukawng Valley. Mr Cooper was Superintendent of the Water and Sewage Dept., Rangoon Corpn.

DERRYThe Rev. J.Died on the trek at Yaw Bang before the end of August, 1942, according to reports from Sgt. Shaw and Sub. Indura Singh – vide Margherita report of 9-10-42 and Shinbwiyang report of 17/25th September, 1942. The Rev J. Derry was attached to the Bishop's Home party

The other four are stated to have reached Tagap Ga and remained there, no further news since – the death of all must be presumed. Mr Lindop reported to Justice Braund that Eric had died on the Shinbwiyang Road

(A Swedish Subject) - The following entry was added on the 11th July 2014 and is an extract from "..and some fell by the wayside." by Major A.R. Tainsh "Mr Prien had remained behind at Maingkwan with his two servants to nurse Tage Thorson while the remainder of the Swedish party continued the journey to India.  Mons. Hallberg had met Mr Arnold I.C.S., at the Namyang river crossing and had asked him to send a message back to Mr North, the Political Officer at Shinbwiyang, with a request to help the Swedes.  North went down the river to Maingkwan by canoe and brought the two Swedes and their servants to Shinbwiyang.  When Thorsen was well enough to continue the journey they set out for Tagup Ga, but could not proceed further as the Namyang river was in flood and it was impossible to ford.  About the beginning of July Tage Thorson died and was buried at Tagup Ga."  There is a little more info. in the book about Mr Thorson's "strength and courage."

He saw him return to the family with the rations, who were about 2 miles ahead. He (Mr Fisher) did not see any of them again.” Ian and Sarah survivors of this family were found in Panitola Hospital in July, 1942, by Dr. (Mrs) C.B. Aaron with whom they are now living. On 30-11-42 the Refugee Administrator, Margherita, reported that there was no further news of Mr and Mrs Turnbull and Ernest and that they must now be presumed dead

Also it is possible that someone may have been carrying the letter for delivery to Mrs Wright as it was addressed to Punjab. ------ The Anglo-Burmese Library is happy to be able to say that this entry is incorrect. May Wright survived the trek and received the rather tattered and well-travelled letter some time later.
